Phew it was a hot and sunny one today! We transplanted our carrots, beets, and parsnips to the outside gardens. Inside, we moved our bigger plant friends into bigger homes- some were coming right out of their pots! Everyone got some water, thanks to John’s amazing duct taping skills, and an old hose.
This Sunday 11-2 we will be doing some much needed weeding, planting, and trimming. Come by and join in!!

Come join us on Wednesday May 7th, 1pm-4pm to make some seed bombs to throw all over the city. Ben, one of our rad gardeners, will be showing us his technique, and chatting about native pollinator and food plants.
Come hang out and meet us! There will be (vegan and gluten free) lunch, good vibes and friendly humans.
On Sunday May 11th, 11am-2pm, Ben and John will be leading a bike tour around east van, scoping out good places for mini gardens, and throwing some bombs. If you want to know some good spots to find pockets of food in the future, come on out and join the fun!

The seeds we planted indoors are really starting to sprout! Peppers, tomatoes, scallions, beets, carrots, basil… The ones the Younguns planted are really taking off!
The beds outside continue to be sprouting lots of fennel, mint (including chocolate mint!) lemon balm, sorrel, mescluns, spinach, thyme, comfrey, radishes and more!
On wednesday we had a new gardner join John and i, and we planted some basil, turnips, and beets. We also inoculated some wood chips with mycelium. We love seeing new faces in the garden!!!

On Sunday we met some new folks who came over from UBC and saw our sweet gardens! They were super nice, and were really into talking sustainable food systems.
We even had them planting some carrots and shallots, and getting excited for harvest!
We planted some kohlrabi, and some more lettuces. We even discovered some giant worms! It was a great sunny day to be in the gardens.

Checking on and feeding the worms, planting seeds, (basil, eggplant, tomatoes!), creating and updating a planting diary- so we know how much we’ve done! Old potatoes were planted in the boxes outside, so excited to see those sprout! It was great to see so many people come out this sunday, even Marla, one of the previous coordinators, came out for a chat and offered some words of encouragement.

Today i cut wedges out of an alder log and stuffed them with myceliated woodchips (oyster), then screwed the wedges back in place. I hope that was what should happen; its my first time!
What a beautiful sunny day though. I hope y’all get outside a bit and enjoy some rays and fresh air. 🙂

Sunday’s gloomy weather brought us indoors for the most part, but thats ok because there was lots to do! Re-vamping the worm bin and planting seeds took up most of the time- hand picking the worms was very rewarding, and we got a large bucket of castings to spread in the gardens. Planting seeds was great, we got all the indoor starts going, so now we wait and see who sprouts!
We had a local friend drop by and help with deconstructing the herb spiral, and in the process found a huge and beautiful Turkey Tail mushroom!!!
We ended the session by spreading the worm castings, and a fresh compost tea made by the lovely Grassroots Bioremediation group on saturday. The plants are going to love living here!!!
